Background

Transforming growth factor-beta3 (TGFB3) is a human protein encoded by the TGFB3 gene.

As a cytokine, this protein participates in cell differentiation, embryogenesis and organismal development. It belongs to the large transforming growth factor- beta superfamily, which comprises multiple cytokines including the TGF-beta family, bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), growthdifferentiation factors (GDFs), inhibins and activins.

Studies have demonstrated that TGFB3 regulates molecules related to cell adhesion and extracellular matrix (ECM) formation during palatal development. Loss of TGFB3 in mammals results in cleft palate malformation, caused by the failure of epithelial cells on both sides of the embryonic palate to fuse properly. Furthermore, TGFB3 plays an essential role in mammalian lung development by modulating cell adhesion and extracellular matrix synthesis in lung tissues. Meanwhile, it regulates epidermal and dermal cell migration in injured skin and participates in woundhealing processes.
